I have just read about the meerkats at Western plains Zoo and the story was about a meerkat mum giving birth to her 5th litter of pups. The breeding program for the meerkats helps to populate the other zoos around the country and some of the pups are even shipped overseas and released into the WILD. The zoo is helping conserve the animals by breeding and releasing.
I read about a Tasmanian devil getting his teeth fixed. A 5 year old Tasmanian devil had three of his tooth chipped and got it pulled out. – Annie Deng
I have just read about the animals at Taronga zoo. Because it has been over 35 degrees every day the animals get really hot. The Zoo provides a number of ways for the animals to cool down during the hot weather including wallows for all three Rhino species, swimming pools for the Elephants, irrigation that sprays across exhibits for many of the animals as well as misting systems for Tasmanian Devils. By doing this the zoo is making sure that the animals are happy and healthy. LILY B
Zoos are creating and setting up more breeding programs to help endangered species of animals. I have read a story about a young rhino coming to Taronga Zoo and the reason why they have done this is so that hopefully the rhino that was already there will mate with the new rhino to produce a baby rhino. This will keep on happening so then there will be rhinos to see for future generations. Kate Book 🙂
The Little Penguin is the smallest penguin out of them all. You will recognize it with dark blue feathers on its back. Taronga Zoo is helping with the rehabilitation and the release of these penguins. They are in danger in their natural habitat with foxes and domestic dogs and cats, as many come in as a victim of one of these animal attacks. They are also enhancing and maintaining the population. The White Rhino Arrival:
I have just viewed an article about the arrival of a female White Rhino at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The article mentioned that the White Rhino was placed in a habitat with another female White Rhino, just to get the Rhinos use to each other. The pair are “getting along like best friends” said Senior White Rhino keeper, Pascale Benoit. It is wished that in about six months’ time, a bull will be brought in reproduce the numbers of White Rhinos. The Taronga Zoo hopes to increase the number of White Rhino and restore these species of animals to its true and safe state. DANIELLA BIANCHI
I just read an article about Luk Chai the elephant celebrating his 2nd birthday! He fitted into the Taronga elephant herd quickly, and the older females looked after him and made sure he was happy and safe. This helps ensure that he grows up loved by not only his herd but the public too. VANESSA B
At Taronga zoo a new Asian elephant was born. These elephants are endangered so the birth of this elephant is the start to the regrowth of the endangered spices. It is a good thing that these elephants are kept in conservations because then the zoo keeps them safe. We should know about this as Asian elephants are being on the verge of being extinct. I read about Cooper the Sea-lion getting at CT scan.
The article was about how Copper had to be taken
in to the specialist center receive a CT scan to
determine if there was any bone infection in his jaw.
Doing this ensures the safety of marine animals and
raises awareness of the problems marine animals have.

My zooooooooooooooooooooooooooo research I read about bears and animal welfare in how reducing rubbish will reduce bears becoming sick and suffer indigestion. Isabella Davey
To Mr Frai,
I read about how the zoo keepers help the animals ‘beat the heat’
This showed that they keepers cared for the animals and were helping them. When a human is helping an animal they are helping the environment. This demonstrates conservation as they did not only help one animal but helped all the animals as treated them to their own special needs. E.g. they froze meaty treats to help the tigers, they hosed down the hippos to keep their skin temperature right.

A female White Rhino has been introduced to Taronga Western Plains Zoo called Likewizi. She is a part of the breeding program and is accompanied by Mopani, another White Rhino. Taronga zoo is hoping to meet a new bull in about 6 months. They are hoping to start a new herd with in the zoo especially after losing four of their White Rhinos the previous year. It is important to continue to breed White Rhinos so that the number of Rhinos stays up. Lara Mendez :S
I have just read the ‘Taronga Zoo animals beat the heat and cool off’ article on the website. It says that on hot days, the Taronga Zoo animals get treats that they would not normally get. The animals receive ice blocks with their favourite foods frozen in them, like meat or fruits. The keepers also hose the animals down with water to cool them off. This helps the animals cool down so that they do not overheat in the warmth and it means that the animals are able to stay reasonably comfortable in the heat. This is helping the animals in the zoo not die or become dehydrated as in the wild, the animals do not get this benefit – Hannah Campbell 😛
I have read an article about Taronga Western Plains zoo is helping with the conservation of the Przewalski’s horse as although the species was declared extinct in the 1960s a small herd was found in the wild. Taronga Zoo has helped breed the horse until a sustainable population was reached. In their homeland of Mongolia the Przewalski’s horse struggled to survive due to competition for food from domesticated horses. In total, Taronga Western Plains Zoo has produced 34 foals. Gina
I have just read about how Taronga and Woolworths are together raising awareness about marine conservation. woolworths is now only selling sustainable seafood. This is good for the environment as less marine life is dying for no reason. Abigail Glezos.
P.S. FRAI IS DA BOMB! Word!
I have read a story about very hot weather at taronga zoo so they are trying to keep all the animals cool. With all the hot weather they have decided to keep the animals cool by making frozen carrot cubes for the zebras, frozen milk for a family of lions and many of the animals got hosed off with nice cool water. This is very helpful for the animals and it is preventing them from getting dehydrated and sick. Izzy Cant 😀
To Frai,
A new White Rhino called Like wizi has arrived in the Taronga Western Plains Zoo. It’s said that the Rhino was placed in a habitat with another female White Rhino and they’re “getting along like best friends”. Taronga Zoo has their hopes up to reproduce more White Rhinos. Likewizi joins Mopani as the Zoo starts to re build the hers because of the following tragic passing of 4 White Rhino last year. SPUDDDD

I just read about Taronga Zoo’s 5 year old Woody the Tassie devil. He has recently had a house call to check up on his teeth as he had major cracks in three of his molars. They got pulled out by veterinary dentist, Dr. Nadine Fiani, who is from SASH. It hasn’t affected his ability to eat, though the keepers are keeping him on a soft food diet for the next few days while his gums heal. Dr Fiani said, “Without the operation, there was a risk that abscesses would form, with terrible results for Woody. By going ahead with the operation Taronga has saved yet another Tassie devil. Lily Tancred 🙂
Recently, the Taronga Western Plain zoo has welcomed female White Rhino called Likewizi; from Werribee zoo in Victoria. The two is getting along well and is in good condition. The zoo hoping to have a bull introduced to the group for breeding in approximately 6 months. This programme is helping the wildlife by breeding endangered species, such as rhinos and lions. Taronga zoo is hoping to widen this programme to more endangered species. Alison Eom
I was reading about Cooper the Sea-lion at Taronga zoo. He got a cat scan to check his teeth and jaw and this was done so that Taronga vets could see if he had a bone infection in his jaw. The sea-lion has undergone prior dental procedures at Taronga Zoo which included root canal and the removal of his bottom canines because of infection. Taronga zoo ensures that the animals have the best welfare and this means that Taronga zoo are looking after all animals. Taronga zoo looks after every animal and this means all the animals can be healthy. Georgia Zalunardo
